6. GI Map

The truth is, the term 'irritable bowel' is a wastebasket term that simply means that the gut is 'off' in some way that has not yet been determined. Diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, and even belly pain, weight gain, and some immune issues are caused by imbalances in the gut. Conventional tests don't pick up on a lot of simple causes of these issues. The GI Map tests for many microbes (bacteria, parasites, yeast etc.) that can cause big problems if out of balance, but can often resolve if found and treated. The GI map can also suggest inflammation or leakiness in the gut. As we say in the Functional Medicine world, 'test, don't guess'.

Some of you may know a similar test called a NutraEval, which was available through the same laboratory. This is almost the same except it requires just a fingerstick blood sample plus urine, instead of an actual venous blood sample. So you can complete the kit at home. It is an extremely useful test for evaluating levels of vital and important vitamins and other nutrients in your body, as well as amino acids. It also looks at a few heavy metal and toxin levels, and can give you an overall general read on the health of certain systems in your body. It is a great general test if you are looking for the deep-level status of several systems in your body and levels of important nutrients.
